Abortion: Emotional/Psychological Risks
Some
women experience an immediate feeling of relief following
an abortion, but many find themselves with feelings
they did not expect. They may have a difficult time
talking about these feelings. However, many women who
have had an abortion experience similar feelings. Some
psychologists have labeled these problems as Post Abortion
Stress.
The symptoms of Post Abortion Stress cover a wide range
of emotions and can affect both men and women who have
lost a child to an abortion. You may experience any
of the following symptoms:
- DEPRESSION
- NIGHTMARES
- FEELINGS
OF LOSS
- SELF-DESTRUCTIVE
BEHAVIOR
- ANGER
- REGRET
- GUILT
- DRUG
OR ALCOHOL ABUSE
- LOSS
OF SELF-ESTEEM
- SEXUAL
PROBLEMS
- BROKEN
RELATIONSHIPS
- EATING
DISORERS
- SUICIDE
Abortion
can also be emotionally traumatic for the father. At
first, some men may feel relieved; others feel powerless
and angry. Whatever their first reaction might be, they
can also experience guilt, isolation, and anger at themselves
and their partner. They may need as much emotional support
as the mother. It takes two to make a pregnancy, and
both are involved in the results.
